Building Bridges

In Ivo Andrić’s novel The Bridge on the Drina, the emblematic bridge of Višegrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina serves as a central narrative over four centuries, reflecting the enduring connection between East and West amid historical shifts from the Ottomans to World War I.

In his keynote Building Bridges, Aaron Frost discusses the role of bridge builders in the tech community. Mastering a skill is just the beginning; the real challenge lies in helping others cross the bridge of knowledge.

Frost outlines the five pillars of Angular communication guidelines:

  1. Helpful and Useful: Communicate with the audience in mind, acknowledging that what’s obvious to an expert may be challenging for beginners.
  2. Personal and Responsible: Maintain transparency and accountability in your communications.
  3. Positive or Constructive: Offer constructive feedback to foster community growth and collaboration.
  4. Open, Honest, Humble, No Fakes, No Rumors: Strike a balanced tone that sets realistic expectations.
  5. Inclusive and Empathetic: Approach discussions with empathy and respect for fellow developers.

As developers, there are diverse ways to act as bridge builders: contributing to GitHub discussions, answering questions on Stack Overflow, publishing technical blog posts, presenting to colleagues, updating documentation, organizing local meetups, or initiating open-source projects.

Ultimately, the key question remains: how can we leave a lasting impact to facilitate the journey for those following in our footsteps?
